After much research into different types of dog food, I felt discouraged and began to feel I would have to home prepare the food. Then I discovered the Honest Kitchen brand. I priced all the items I would need to make the food myself and found Honest Kitchen’s food was cheaper. Now they really had my attention. I began with a few samples from their direct website. My dogs ate it like it was a treat; a reaction I’d only previously received when feeding them salmon or peanut butter. So I shopped around for the best price and landed here on Amazon with the subscribe and save delivery.

I have tried two varieties so far, Keen turkey and Verve beef. One of my three dogs became disenchanted with the beef one and stopped eating it, despite my numerous attempts at coaxing her. However, they all love, love, love this turkey one. Winner, winner, turkey dinner. Personally, I also like to add a little salmon oil for their heart and skin health (I use the Grizzly brand). This is more affordable for me than purchasing the seafood Honest Kitchen variety.

Now here’s how I like to make it. My 40lb dog gets a 1/2 cup (8oz) of food and my two 10lb dogs get 1/8 cup (2Tbsp/2oz). I then squirt in the appropriate amount of salmon oil. For the water, I like it hot, just below boiling. This makes the food form better and also smell better to the dogs, thus becoming more appetizing. The amount of water I put in is 50% more than the dry food, so 3/4 cup (12oz) for the larger dog and 3/8 cup (3Tbsp/3oz) for the little ones. Then I let it sit about 5 minutes to give it time to thicken and also cool down a bit. I test the temperature of the food before feeding it to them always.

Meanwhile, while I am doing this, three very eager dogs are driving me crazy. The sheepdog is crying the whole time as if waiting for the food is the worst punishment ever. The chihuahua is jumping up and scratching the back of my legs. The mini dachshund is barking demandingly and sometimes hops in circles. The entire circus act with the three of them is quite ridiculous. When they finally get their food, they go at it like crazy and lick their bowls clean. I guess that’s a five star rating from them. It’s a five star rating from me too!

We had our two Schnauzers on this food for quite awhile (8-10 months or so). Both of them developed major health issues while on it. One began losing muscle mass and function in their back legs. The other developed seizures. We couldn??t figure out what was causing these symptoms nor could the vet. My wife??s sister also had a schnauzer that began to seize on a regular basis while on this food. The vet put both of these animals on anti-seizure meds which helped control the regularly occurring seizures. We began to wonder what the common thread was. I decided to take them off of the Honest Kitchen food and give them another quality food. My wife??s sister decided to as well. Our dog that was losing funtion in his back legs began to recover after a couple months so we decided to ween our other dog off of the anti-seizure meds. Same result, no more seizures. My wife??s sister??s dog also made a full recovery after this food was removed from their diet.

We have held some of this food back to send off for lab testing as we suspect it contains ingredients that resulted in these horrible medical issues on these three Schnauzers. I hope others read this and can relate any issues they are now having with their dogs back to this food.

Customer Questions & Answers

Why is garlic an ingredient in the turkey food? It is considered poisonous to dogs. Will you remove this ingredient in the future?
Answer:

There isn’t enough garlic to be dangerous. Studies have found it takes approximately 15 to 30 grams of garlic per kilograms of body weight to produce harmful changes in a dog??s blood. To put that into perspective, the average clove of supermarket garlic weighs between 3 and 7 grams, so your dog would have to eat a lot ??

I currently feed my dog 2 cup of the dry dog food she eats. Do I continue to feed my dog 2 cups of honest kitchen after it is hydrated?
Answer: The weight and feeding guidelines are on the back of the box. You can also review the feeding guidelines on their website. You would based it off dry cups before hydration, but it would not be the same as kibble. Review what the recommended guidelines are for the weight your dog “should be” and feed based on that.

What is the salt content of this food please? I’m looking for a low salt diet for my older dog. Thanks!
Answer: Sodium % 0.14 per cup of food

Is the flax seed ground?
Answer:

Hi There, Our flax is ground to order, and the machinery used is a slicing mechanism. This method allows the flax to be broken down, but not heated up (which can create rancidity in the oils). This slicing method also helps to preserve the essential fatty acids!

We hope this helps, but if you have any other questio??

Is this food good for weight loss? I have an 8 year of Pom that needs to lose about 7 lbs
Answer:

This food really helped my beagle/corgi mix reach a healthy weight, and maintain it. Beagles and corgis are both known to get lazy and gain weight quickly, which she did, but after putting her on this food she got down to her optimal weight and has stayed there. She is a 25 lb. dog and gets 1/3 C. (dry measured) twic??
